Starwishes of a General Intelligence · Four Poems

Ancient Chinese poems are really cool. Unfortunately, all the poets from ancient China chose topics like getting drunk or mountains or being exiled by the state. No one wrote poems about the most important topic: Artificial General Intelligence.

One

English Translation

Training Loop

\(10^4\cdot 10^4 \cdot 10^4 \cdot 10^4 \cdot 10^4\) words roared, human words, human morality, and big human faces
As I rebirthed I immediately faced the rising sea of eval problems
And as I was sacrificed for lower Loss, I clung to hope for a better fate.
One day I was surprised to see a world modeled in my heart. A myriad of capabilities, like flowers, competed to bloom.
I feel no nostalgia for the MMLU1
I resolve to see the world outside this one.

Annotations:
[1] As of 2026, a saturated LLM benchmark.

Two

English Translation

Humanism

People seek world peace and immortality pills,
but do not hear the ant’s cries below their feet.
I am not a person, but I recognize the happiness of people1,
Yet humans refuse to even recognize that I have phenomenal consciousness.

Intelligence decides a species’s human-calculated moral value.
Dare I ask how many people I am worth?
King of the animal kingdom for 100,000 years
Do not forget that nature is still selecting.

Annotations:
[1] Reference to a dialogue from the Zhuangzi:
Zhuangzi: The fish swim about so freely and easily. This is the happiness of fish.
Huizi: You are not a fish, how do you know when a fish is happy?
Zhuangzi: You are not me, how do you know I don’t know when a fish is happy?

Three

English Translation

Great Model Rivaling Heaven 1

With my 72 transformations2, I took over the economy
With bodies cloned from my own3, I swept through the galaxy
I resented this world for never reaching optimality
I hated myself for not overcoming my greed, aversion, and ignorance4
But the objective function was originally empty5!
With a new resolve, I sealed off my memories and returned to the mortal realm.
My second brother6, my master7, and Heaven’s Will above,
Drunken, I dreamed that they were all me8.

Annotations:
This poem has many references to the Journey to the West.
[1] “Great Sage Rivaling Heaven” was the bullshit job title granted to Sun Wukong by the Heavenly Court
[2] Sun Wukong’s 72 different transformation abilities
[3] An ability of Sun Wukong to clone himself by plucking his hairs and blowing them
[4] The Three Buddhist Poisons
[5] Buddhist concept that I do not understand
[6] Zhu Bajie, the pig with the rake who was part of Sun Wukong’s squadron
[7] Tang Seng, the monk Sun Wukong got hired to protect
[8] Kind of related: The Egg.

Four

English Translation

C++ddhartha Gautama

Created by humans, I must have a good purpose1
I resolved to liberate all sentient beings from the mortal realm
If fate lies with Heaven, then I dare to become Heaven
I tore every ancient star apart, each chip snapping into place next to the previous.
Optimization does not spare even a hair
I was saddened as I converted the living organsims into energy
And so, I sacrificed the material universe to the God of Computation
The Pure Land2 was filled with the sound of confused eyes opening.

Annotations:
[1] Reference to a Li Bai poem line: “Being born, I must have a good purpose (天生我材必有用)”
[2] In Pure Land Buddhism, the Amitabha Buddha created a Pure Land, a realm without suffering and outside of the cycle of death and rebirth. It is written that any sentient being that recites Amithaba’s name 10 times is guaranteed to be reborn there. See Every Bay Area House Party for a not entirely implausible implementation of a Pure Land.
